چکیده

9 Broadband whistler waves in the frequency range 7-10 kHz and 15-19 kHz, generated by 10 F-region CW HF ionospheric heating in the absence of electrojet currents, were detected 11 by the DEMETER satellite overflying the HAARP transmitter during HAARP/BRIOCHE 12 campaigns. The whistler waves are in a frequency range corresponding to the F-region 13 Lower-Hybrid (LH) frequency and its harmonic generated by mode conversion of LH waves 14 that were parametrically excited by HF-pump-plasma interaction at the upper hybrid layer. 15 The paper discusses the basic physics and presents a model that conjectures: (i) The whistler 16 wave observed at the LH frequency is due to the interaction of the LH waves with meter17 scale field aligned striations; (ii) The whistler wave at twice the LH frequency is due to the 18 interaction of two counter-propagating LH waves. The model is supported by numerical 19 simulations that show good agreement with the observations. 20

Whistler Wave Interactions with Space Plasmas during HF Heating of the Ionosphere at Arecibo

We demonstrate that signals at 28.5 kHz emitted from the Naval (NAU) transmitter in Puerto Rico e ectively couple into ionospheric ducts, induced/enhanced by the Arecibo HF heater, and propagate into the conjugate hemisphere as ducted whistlers. Also presented are suspected radar detections of whistler-triggered electron precipitation events. NAU-generated whistlers have intensities su cient to...

Generation of ELF waves during HF heating of the ionosphere at midlatitudes

Modulated high frequency radio frequency heating of the ionospheric F-region produces a local modulation of the electron temperature, and the resulting pressure gradient gives rise to a diamagnetic current. The oscillations of the diamagnetic current excite hydromagnetic waves in the ELF range that propagate away from the heated region. The generation of the waves in the 2 – 10 Hz range by a mo...

بررسی گرمایش الکترونی در برهم‌کنش‌های لیزر - پلاسما

In this paper, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and electron heating in laser plasma propagating along the plasma fusion is investigated by particle-in cell simulation. Applying an external magnetic field to plasma, production of whistler waves and electron heating associated with whistler waves in the direction perpendicular to external magnetic field was observed in this simulation. The pla...

Geometric modulation: A more effective method of steerable ELF/VLF wave generation with continuous HF heating of the lower ionosphere

[1] ELF/VLF radio waves (300 Hz–30 kHz) are difficult to generate with practical antennae, because of their extraordinarily long (10–1000 km) wavelengths, and the lossy nature of the Earth’s surface at these frequencies. ELF/VLF waves have been successfully generated via amplitude modulated (AM) HF (2–10 MHz) heating of the lower ionosphere. Through the temperature-dependent conductivity of the...

Geometric modulation: A new, more effective method of steerable ELF/VLF wave generation with continuous HF heating of the lower ionosphere

ELF/VLF waves can be generated via amplitude modulated HF heating of the auroral electrojet, which turns a patch of ionospheric currents into a radiating antenna. A new, more powerful technique, termed `geometric modulation', involves scanning the HF beam in geometric patterns with no power modulation. Utilizing results obtained from the HAARP facility, we show that geometric modulation enhance...
